CM Noise from rear of car

I have a noise coming from what sounds like the rear of the car. It is kinda like a rumbling noise that happens after you let off the gas and are coasting. I just put on new tires, old ones were so noisey I could not hear anything. I was wondering if it might be rear bearings or maybe the universal joints. Car is a 93 Coupe with 31,000 miles. It seems to be worse at the start of a drive and lessens later, but is still there. Any suggestions??

HI there,
It would be suggested to check the rear differential.
Normally, rear hub assemblies are noisy all the time.
If your noise is throttle sensitive, then its most likely a bearing inside the differential.

What about crown gear/pinion gear interface? Isn't this somewhat variable during the different loading effects of drive, float and coast? Maybe the pinion depth is not right? This is all theoretical on my part as I don't know the physics of a Vette diff.

HI there,
Absolutely, thus the bearings.
If the ring and pinion gear pattern was to change, it usually is when it is first installed.
However in any differential if a bearing was to fail, then you change the pinion to ring gear contact, thus as you state INTERFACE.
You are correct.
