CM 1970 Back Window Glass Replacement.

I just ordered a new rear glass for my 1970 LT1 with the correct date code etc. and trying to decide if I should attempt to do this myself (not knowing the process) or have it done by an auto glass specialist? ------------ Not sure how the glass is retained within the frame?
Thank you.

HI there,
The trim is not that hard, the biggest issue is the separation of the bonding agent from the actual body to remove the glass.
Normally, a hot knife or scorer is used.
Not usually recommended for those not familiar with it.
Installation of glass requires different chemicals and primers to adhere the glass.
Now, remember, the glass is a structural part of the vehicle if it is stationary, so bonding is CRITICAL to safety, as well as integrity of the vehicle body.

Thank you for your comprehensive reply. ---- Will that apply though if the rear window is removable and the glass is retained inside of a metal frame which is the case on this car?

HI there,
Showing here how LITTLE I know about 1970 models.
If you cannot pop the glass like a hatch roof or the like, then it is structural.
The trim usually fits around the window prior to bonding it down to the body.
At least thats what I remember, I may be wrong.

the cars with a/c had a fixed rear window which would be structural. the non a/c cars had a removable rear window. i never tried to get the trim piece off of one because mine was an a/c car without the removable window but i think if it doesn't just pull off that id'e just buy a new one of those to.

Just curious, was this a change made in 69 or 70? I had a 68 with factory a/c and my rear window was removable.

It was 30+ years ago when I restored my 68. From what I remember the frame had screws on the edges holding it together, but it was a long time ago.

Did you get new rubber seal as well, or just the glass?

i don't recall the screws as my 68 was a vert and my 73 and 74 both had a/c (hence, no pop out window). when i restored the 74 i put the a/c back in it with all parts except the condenser coil coming out of a 74 caprice. you can even buy the silver and green gm/harrison sticker to put on the compressor. buy the way, i also have a spare one of those stickers.

I no longer have the car or the build sheet for my 68. I know the a/c was factory but I don't think I ever checked the back window. This was a strange 68. It was a British Racing Green coupe 327/350 AM/FM Stereo, Tinted Windows (all -required for A/C) and A/C. No Power Steering or Power Brakes. My wife drove it to the end of the street once and returned because it was too hard for her to steer. See my photo gallery.

I always though that all 68-72 coupes had a removable rear window. I believe that 72 was the last year for the removable window, 73 and up were all fixed - I could be wrong.

Ralph, sorry to hijack your thread. Let us know how you make out.

I am the second owner of a 1969 w/air and the rear window is removable not 100 % but think 73 was the last year for removable window Steve

what do you mean removable but not 100%? the rear window was either fixed with plastic trim all around and screws or it was removable. you guys are gonna make me drag out my ncrs books and look this rear window thing up aren't you. btw, here's a few good links on c3 production facts.
