This is a continuation of the discussion of this topic that was started in the thread "1970 Back Window Glass Replacement." I owned a 1968 coupe that had factory A/C (verified with build sheet) and a removable rear window. There is a belief that when A/C was installed, the rear window was changed to a fixed window at the factory, thus someone modified the car I owned. That is entirely possible as I was the 3rd owner and I purchased the car in 1975 (sorry I sold in in 2001). I had always assumed that the removable rear window was a factory installed item. I did a little searching on the Internet today and it appears that 68-72 coupes all had a removable rear window. In 73 it was changed to a fixed window and many people were modifying the 73 to add the removable rear window. Much link some 63 coupe owners used 64 parts to remove the "Split Window". What a mistake that was! Does anyone have accurate information about the years in which the removable rear window was standard? Was it ever changed to a fixed window at the plant if A/C was installed? Curious minds want to know. John

yes you are j. it was the rear astro vent that changed when a car had a/c or not NOT the rear window. 68-72 ALL had removable rear glass. 73-77 all had fixed rear glass. if the car had a/c the rear astro vents under the grills on the back deck lid were dummys. if it didn't have air the rear astro vents under the grills on the back deck lid were functional.

Thanks for taking the time to look this up. My car had two small grills on the rear deck just behind the removable rear window, but I don't think they went anyplace. I removed the grills when I did the painting (painted the grills off of the car) and I don't remember seeing anything connecting to the plenum they were covering (this is from 32 years ago). Were these grills part of the AstroVent system? It seems to me I remember seeing AstroVent etched into the passengers side window but I did not know what that was. The 68 had many unique things that were changed in 69. It was hard to get correct parts for it even in 1975-76. I got many parts and all the chrome I needed at the Spring 1976 Carlisle meet. The chrome I was getting from GM was really bad any you could not return Special Order parts unless they sent the incorrect item. What book did you look this up in? What years does it cover? Thanks again, John

that sounds correct. the a/c cars never had the vent holes cut into the fiberglass deck lid. it was just the grills sitting on top of indentations that went nowhere. as for where i looked it up, i have a few ncrs judging manuals from the vetes i've restored and i also belong to ncrs so i just posted your question there also. their site is ncrs.org
