Excellant/Great information on modern moter oil ...

Just my 2 cents ... I have a 1966 427, L72 Corvette with a vintage 66 block (cast feb 66) installed a Hyd flat tappet Comp Cam Extreme energy cam w .515 lift.... used comp cam break in lube on cam surfaces & primed engine before starting with a drill ........for cam break in used conventional dinosor oil 10/30 . she started instantly & ran her at 1800 rpm for 20 minutes .changed oil & filter ... added 6 quarts of Moble one 10/30 synthetic ...............that was six years ago use moble one only .......change oil at beginning of each season probably 1,000 miles on oil ,

Six Years & 7,000 miles later engoine fine ,oldies day at NE Dragway 13.06 @ 105 MPH ......no hedders stock side exhaust .........engine had been totally rebuilt buy previous owner in 1995, synthetic oil works for me The Dog

It's rather flippant to dismiss the need for hardened valve gaskets so cavilerly. It's a thousand dollar + job to remove and refit heads properly when switching to unleaded fuels in a motor designed for leaded gasoline.

How many of those 60K miles on your '67 were logged before leaded fuel stopped being sold in the 80s? Chevy small blocks aren't exactly known for great valves, even under the best of conditions. I had oil seepage (blue smoke starts) at 50k miles.
ANSWER---
Chuck- I spent my $1000 on machine shop work to the block and heads (which did NOT include hardened valve seats), in 1977. The 60,000 miles were put on that motor since then. We drove that car on unleaded premium (11.0 :1 Compression) all over the U.S.A. on NCRS road tours. There were many 1/4 mile passes on that motor too (14.60 @ 100 mph)! In all that time I NEVER had a failure of ANY kind. That little 327 was a great engine!! If you build 'em right they will last!!
