CM running different size rear tires

would running a 17000 mile tire on the RR and a new (spare tire) on the LR cause any differential overheating problems or is that not enough of a tire size difference to matter? i got a flat today and it sliced the tire enough that it couldn't be fixed so i put on my spare and went on my way. i'm not 100% sure i want to replace my tires yet since they only have 17k miles on them. anyone think this could cause a rear diff problem with the different tire circumferences since one is new and the other has 17k on it.

Yes it can, especially with AWD or 4WD. The outer circumference needs to be exactly the same on all 4 tires.. That is why if you need one new tire, it is recommneded to do all 4 on 4WD or AWD. It's not only rear diff problems, but ABS, traction control, and stability control if you have it. Not recommended.

I believe the FJ is not full time AWD. But you probably do have some kind of limited slip or locking rear differential. If you want to just "get by" without replacing two tires for now, you could rotate your tires front to rear. This would put two evenly worn tires on the rear so you wouldn't cause any extra wear on the rear differential clutchs.

And while you'd have tires of not exactly the same outer diameter on the front, I doubt the difference is enough to cause ABS concerns. (the FJ has a full size spare right?) Of course the variance allowed between wheel speed sensor readings is different for many manufacturers. But i would think the tire wear difference would have to be more than just 17k miles.

Still... Now you have no spare. I'd plan on buying two tires sometime soon.

Also a good idea is to contact toyota and ask them?

Probably would consider buying a new tire sooner rather than later..

Keep the 17K mile tire as a spare.

you win the prize rob. i drove it to work (80 miles r/t) and it was like nothing happened. no vsc problems, no antilock problems. threw it into 4wd doing 60 just for kicks. nothing. the difference wasn't enough to matter. since i wasn't sure if it would cause any unnecessary wear on the diff, i went and had my flat tire repaired and put the spare back on the rear door. thanks for the replies guys. appreciate them all as always.
