I have a 99 FRC with the lowest level standard radio/casette. It is not a Bose unit. I decided to upgrade to the GM unit with a CD that has the same plug in and mounting brackets, etc. When I went to purchase the radio, I was advised that there is no way to do this upgrade, even though everything would plug in, because the radio model or serial number is somehow programmed into the car's body control module and cannot be changed. It sounds kind of weird to me, but as complex as everything else is perhaps this is the case. I do not want to use an aftermarket radio as I want to maintain the original look of the car. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Your help will be appreciated.

HI there, You can plug and play this unit, as long as the radio isnt locked. Just remember, if you want BOSE, there are other parts you need to add. The Bose signal processor and other pieces. Allthebest, c4c5 |

Thanks for the quick response. I was not planning on using a Bose unit because of the issues you noted. The radio/CD with the plugins, etc, that matches mine was used in a wide variety of Chevy's such as the Impala. The unit, by the way, is new and should not be locked. Does this sound reasonable? Thanks again.

And even if it were locked, we have the info to pass on to unlock it for you. Mine was not locked but a security code was programmed into it and I did not get it with the car. Followed the instructions I have at home and was able to reset the code to my own.

Just my .02..... Put in a good aftermarket unit, you won't be sorry. The reality is, despite the Bose name, the factory stereos are not very good. Fidelity wise, volume wise, etc. And a lot of complexity comes with that mediocrity. As C4C5 said, signal processors, etc. And the new aftermarket stuff is so cheap, you can't go wrong- plus, you'll get MP3 capability, ipod integration, etc. Once you hear a good aftermarket stereo in a Vette with good speakers, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. There is no fidelity comparison, none. Again, my .02.... |

I can understand where the OP is coming from. The aftermarket radio installs always look aftermarket. I would love to upgrade mine too. I will wait till I start to have problems with the stock Bose then go for the aftermarket. If I can wait that long. I have not seen very many aftermarket upgrades in person, mostly on the various forums and some look very good in the pics.
