I have a 62 with327/340HP. When I start it, it will run as long as I hold the key in the start position (not good) as soon as I let go, it quits. I hear a whining sound, it is probably the starter still engaged with the flywheel. How do I diagnose this problem? Is it the starter, the switch, or something else?

HI there, Sounds like your switch is shorted out, not supplying power to the ignition, EXCEPT when your key in the start position. Simply check for B+ power at the terminal at the coil when you ignition is ON, not start. That will tell you if your getting power there. Allthebest, c4c5 |

Replace your Ballast Resistor. It's on the firewall, in the engine compartment, it looks like a white block with one screw on each end and a wire attached to each screw. There is a strap that holds it in position. I think Corvette Central has them. Part # 591030---$21.95 ea.

Check for power at resistor too, before purchase. You will need to keep going back until you have power. When you have power the last item was bad. I too think you will get back to the switch. Good luck. Hope it goes well Ken | ||||||||||||||||||||

You can take one wire off the resistor and fasten it under the other screw/wire. Then see if it will start. If it starts and runs with the key in the run position, then replace the resistor.
