It sounds like the clutch is not working. Does it start ok in neutral?

CM 1965 shift lockup

The shifter will not find neutral.....anywhere I put it
the car lunges forward or backward when I turn the key
It is like the shifter rods are hung up....I got under and
freed them up but no luck.

The transmission goes into first and reverse, but you cannot find neutral? Pushing in the clutch pedal and cranking the engine over causes the car to go forward or reverse depending on what gear you are in? Sounds like you may have two problems, when was the last time everything worked correctly?

CM 1965 4 sp. shifter lockup

about a month ago when I parked it in the garage..there was no
previous problem except for the reverse lockout lever has never
worked and sometimes it was hard to get the car into reverse.

I think I should start with adjusting the clutch...can you please
run me thru the motions of how this is done? The car cannot
easily be towed from where it is. thanks

adjusting the clutch did nothing. I also freed up the rods into the
neutral positions and the car starts without lunging but even
with the clutch in I cannot shift into any gear, it just grinds...
do you have any further advice you can give me?

Does the transmission now go into neutral, and does it start and run ok in neutral? With the car NOT running, can you shift thruough all the gears?

This sounds like a clutch problem, does the pedal feel normal as in smoothness and pedal effort?

This sounds like it could be a shifter/linkage problem or internal transmission failure. It may be time for a pro to look at it.
