Question Belt Replacements

1999 Corvette Coupe 100,000 miles. Please advise any tips to help me decide if I should attempt to do it myself. In the past I have replaced spark plugs, fuel filter and bled brake system. It seems that it is really close quarters to work in. Any ideas would be of great assistance.

HI there,
It is tight, for sure.
You will need to access the AC belt from the bottom, and you will need a 15 and 13 mm box wrench.
Remove the alternator belt first, and slide it past the balancer at the bottom.
Then, go under and remove the AC belt.
Just remember, these tensioners do wear out over time, so you might consider replacing them also.
If you have an automatic, the AC belt is very tough with the cooler lines running close to it.

If you can do the things that you've stated, why would you even think about going to the dealer? Use these documents, change the belts yourself, and buy yourself a couple of tanks of gas with the money you just saved.

Question, how do you determine if the tensioners require replacement ? I understood that if the line indicator falls into the scale you are ok. Should i know of something different ? Please advise.

Hi there,
Normally, a chirp noise when the belts are cold is the first indication.
You can also remove the belt and see if the tensioners moves in and out in relation to the engine, as that usually indicates the internals are wearing out.
There really is NO set inspection procedure for tensioner replacement.
100k, it would be suggested.

Appreciate your answer. I have a squeel upon quick initial acceleration. It quickly subsides as the speed is decreased. I question if the squeel is due to worn belts ( 50,000 on the accessory belt and 100.000 on the A /C ) or if a pulley or other idler is the reason. I'm trying to determine which one or the other or both are responsible. The car is not beat, but has been driven reasonably since I bought it new. Your excellent opinion is highly respected!

Replaced the 2 belts. A / C was a real B----. Finally got it. Previous engine noises are gone. Belts apparantly required replacing. Thanks for your assistance Paul.

Only if you'll split it with me. A good scotch requires good conversation and a couple of good laughs!
