Totally stock 2001 A4 Coupe here. I had this same or similar problem when I first got the car. When I would punch it, the RPM's would kick up and the car would start to blast but suddenly the engine would clamp down on itself and the RPM's would drop. If I milked the pedal (habit of dealing with carbureted engines), the RPM's would kick back up and the car would move the way it should at WOT.

I have since went with a K&N filter, a bunch of Techron and strictly Chevron fuel. That has helped tremendously and I haven't had the issue all summer, including a bunch of trips around the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Since the only thing I understand about engines is the air flow to fuel mixture on carbureted engines, this was my mindset when choosing to go with the K&N filter. It sounds like this would be a classic situation for some BG-44. Agree? Disagree?

Now if I could just find some around town. The search is yielding nothing.

On the subject of MAF's. When I purchased my 2000 coupe a little over a year ago, I was constantly getting a Check Engine Light (CEL). After checking codes, I would get O2 sensor indications. O2 sensors were replaced and within 10 minutes of driving I would get the CEL again with the same O2 sensor codes. I was also getting an intermittent hesitation that went away after the car warmed up.

I asked around, and the first person I contacted asked if I had other than the stock MAF installed. When I bought the car it had a SLP High Perfomance MAF installed with the K&N cold air intake. He said if at all possible put the stock MAF back on and try running again.

To make a long story short, I haven't had a repeat of the CEL in over a year with the stock MAF installed.

What I did notice when I removed The SLP MAF, it came with a short harness to connect to the stock harnees and the SLP has a temperature sensor exactly the same as the stock temp sensor in the cold air duct. I beleive that the two temp sensors were conflicting with each other causing the CEL to come on.

Not sure if this has anything to do with the problem at hand in this thread, but hope it might help someone else with the same problem in the future.
