Unhappy 2002 C5 3 Elec Probs 1 Rattle Any Relation?

I have multiple small annoying problems and have just spent the Baltimore / Miami game reading the relevant parts of the service manual. I am wondering now what might be related and how many problems I really have.

1. Several months long problem - Active Handling engages excessively, especially when the speed is above 50 mph and roads are bumpy. I have gotten "Service Active Handling" twice during the life of the car but that problem has gone away upon restart. The most recent time I had learned how to read the codes and I got one indicating problems with the steering wheel position sensor. (1287 or 1289 I think but I did look it up so if I remember the code number wrong please disregard). I intend to replace this sensor at a convenient moment, for now I just turn active handling off.

2. A highly intermittent rattle coming from the area of the defroster vent for the last couple of months. (aside - I have held off bringing the car in for service hoping the rattle would become consistent enough to find)

No codes thrown by problems 3 & 4, and the 1289 has cleared naturally.

3. Last week, the right hand turn signal / Daytime Running Light stopped working. When I use the RH turn signal the front lamp is dark while the back lamps and DIC indicator both flash much faster than normal. Left works fine both as turn signal and DRL.

4. Just today I noticed (might have been going on all week) that the HVAC control center is nighttime dim and unreadable during the day.

I've been reading up in the manual about the sun load sensor for HVAC and the DRL sensor and am curious how the vehicle reacts if one or both of these has become inoperative, and in turn if the rattle might be a disconnected wire associated with these knocking into something.

What sensor controls bright / dim for the HVAC control unit? I can't figure this out from the manual.

Is there a significance to page 8-201 having the DRL sensor and the RH turn signal on the same wiring diagram?

Looking at the defroster vent really for the first time, the DRL switch looks like two concentric disks flush to the defroster grate while the sun load sensor shows a plastic button rising above the defroster grate. It is odd, and I am wondering whether the DRL sensor once had a plastic upper part that got knocked off some how. If anyone had time to take a post a picture just showing what the defroster grate with these two sensors should look like.

Thanks for your thoughts,
Eric

HI there,
Your active handling issue is most likely your steering wheel position sensor.

Defroster problems usually require you to remove your upper dash pad, so once that is removed, you can see what your issue might be.

If your signals flash faster, that means that there is a short in the system, by either a blown light bulb or a wire that may be broken. Careful inspection of that front harness at your turn signal lens should be done.

You probably will need an HVAC control head.
Some people remove them and replace the LED lighting, but that all depends on your mechanical capability.

Allthebest, c4c5

CM HVAC Control Unit Repair Manual

Thanks C4C5,

Can you point me to where I can download or buy the manual for repairing the HVAC control unit? The service manual only covers as far as removal and reinstallation.

Best Regards,
Eric
