CM 1984 security system

Will the security system in the 84s keep the engine from starting? Is this one that is suppose to have a chip on the key? Mine will not start with the key but will with the switch I have wired directly to the starter. If the security system does keep it from starting, is there any way other than what I have already done to bypass the security system? The keys I have are the type made at the hardware store. The security light on the dash is on all of the time.

My alarm module is dead (too lazy to install the new module I bought), but I have no trouble, save for no alarm. The car starts & runs just fine. It's on my LONG fix list.

I'm slow to blame the module itself in your case, given I'm running without mine.

Sounds like something connected to the alarm system is causing your starter to lockout. But what?

Not sure, but as I say, from my own experience, I'd look for something other than the in-dash control module itself. Perhaps there's an alarm relay that's fused and needs replacing. That's the first thing I look for in my C4 anytime something acts weird. Those relays fuse closed and keep whatever they're controlling on constantly. Happened with my antenna.

Another thought is, are you using the key to open the door (disables the alarm)? Maybe there's something wrong with that switch. Maybe the ignition switch in the column is likewise in need of inspection.

Does your horn work? If not, your alarm may be kicking in, but without the horns, all you'll find is the no-start situation you have.

The VATS system to which you refer with the key chip started in 1986, so no, you don't have it.

Security light comes and goes. When I turn the key I get nothing. From what I've read the way the system works is that the alarm is activated when the lock button is pushed. It is deactivated by turning the key in the door which actuates a button to deactivate the system. I pulled the door panel and found the switch which was broke. I've tried to short the wires together but still get the security light when turning the ignition. I am also having a problem with the alternator not charging(would this have anything to do with the security system not operating properly?) Thanks.

Sounds like you may be on to something with that door switch.

Did you check the alarm relay?

The alternator shouldn't have anything to do with this situation. You should have it tested, in fact, the whole charging system.

Sadly, too many people let batteries drain then don't properly charge them before they run the car. This throws the alternator into overdrive and usually cooks the regulator. The moral of the story is: buy a stand alone charger and use it on a car that hasn't been started for a while, just to get the battery in shape.

Where is the alarm relay located?

Unfortunately I'm one of those who didn't properly charge the battery before running it(lesson learned). Is the regulator replaceable without having to replace the whole alternator? Thanks for your help.

Not sure about that relay location. I'd have to hit the Chilton or Haynes manuals for that. I think it may behind the DIC in the center console. I've replaced so many, it gets a little hazy where they're all hiding.

Sadly, the regulator is internal, so if it's gone, you'll be sporting a new alternator.

the regulator is replaceable $3-4. Having never had an alternator apart, I broke the brush holder(its ceramic) which cost about $20. Another expensive lesson learned.

I just saw a funky looking starter/theft deterrent relay on eBay in my periodic search for random 1985 parts. From the look of things, maybe investigate that item.

The internal regulator can be user-replaced? You must have more knowledge of the inner workings than I've come across at the auto parts shop out my way. Each time mine fries, I have to get a new alternator (lifetime warranty).

Went through four in the last ten years. Think I solved the problem though. This one is on its third season.

There is a relay and it is, as stated, behind the DIC. Here's the schematic for the '84 ('85 virtually the same):

You can remove the relay, place a jumper wire between either green/white wire and the purple wire, then hit the key and see if it starts.

I have had this problem before, after I unlock the door with my key the starter will not work. The fix for this was to disconnect the battery and reconnect it. everything functions fine. it doesn't happen all the time. I suspect that either a relay is being held in or the anti-theft device has a glitch in it. Someday this will not work and and I will have to find out what is doing it. Disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it has kept me off the trailer a couple of times.
