My 1999 Corvette oil pressure gage reads 40 psi when I turn the key on. After starting it reads 80 psi (max) while the digital read out says between 80 -110 psi? Since the readings do change does this indicate there is a problem with the oil pressure sensor needing to be replaced -- or do I have a serious other problem??? Is it safe to drive the car?? Any help will be appreciated.

going to stick my neck out here I sounds like a sensor issue .With a TECH 2 you can command the gauges to do a sweep the oil gauge will sweep from 0 To 80 and the rest also sweep to confirm correct operation. I would say the oil gauge should be zero key on engine off.there has been plenty of issues with the senders . you can use a manual gauge to confirm your dash readings. without a scan tool kind of flying by the seat of your pants Steve

It is the oil pressure sensor- common failure- access is either cutting a hole in the cowl area (which can't be seen) or taking off intake. Make sure you get the brass replacement part, not the aluminum one. Mine failed last month. there is a sticky, with many posts under c5 tech at corvetteforum.com

I would agree that it is the oil pressure sensor "Common Failure" for sure! When you diagnose it and find that to be true - take a look at the remote oil pressure sensor kits that you can purchase online. They relocate the oil pressure sensor out from under the cowl where you can replace them in the future within 5 minutes - instead of the 3 or 4 hour project that it can take now in the stock location. Some of the kits you can get even have inline mechanical oil pressure gauges - functional and look cool when you pop the hood open... | ||||||||||||||||||||

There are newer brass senders now being produced. See if you can find one and it will probably solve the issue. The replacements from GM were made of alluminum which failed rapidly for many people therefore starting the relocation kits or cutting holes.
