CM 1980 Corvette Help.

We have a 1980 Corvette. We purchased it 4 months ago, it was running great, except you needed to pump the gas pedal to get it to crank. So hubby put gas in the carb to get it to crank faster. It backfired,,,and now the new exhaust gets so hot on one side it's melting the underneath. We had new exhaust lines and mufflers put on a week before this. So we had it towed to the shop for repair. Hubby put a new carb on it before taking it. The mechanic has changed the intake manifold, he has unhooked the exhaust and checked the catalic converters. He says it isn't firing on the cylinders 1,7,4,and 6. It still does the same thing. We need help..bad! We enjoy the car, and it has been in the shop a month,,,,we miss her very much.

If you have any ideas whats happening,,,,,I will so much appreciate your time and help.

We live in Southern Georgia,,,,,,with no one specualizing in Corvette repair.

Shann......Dan & Shann Alle.

your going to have to back way up to solve these problems or get someone to explain them better to get any kind of help. 1st of all, pumping the gas has nothing to do with the engine cranking. and your backfire has nothing to do with your exhaust melting the underneath of your car. and why your mechanic changed your intake manifold is beyond anything i can comprehend. it would take writng a novel to try and walk you through starting to fix any of this. if you list the town that you live in maybe someone on here could recommend a good competent mechanic for you to take the car to. your fuel issue sounds like a bad fuel pump. your exhaust issue sounds like a bad catyletic conveter or incorrectly routed exhaust pipes. and your cylinders not firing could be any of 100 different things. i'de start with verifying your firing order on that one.

edit: sorry, i didnt notice that you lived in southern georgia. may someone here could recommend a shop in your area.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas and help. We have decided to have the engine rebuilt and the trans, rather than try and get it repaired. Last evening we found a gentleman who can take care of it(Mack). We thought that we were taking it to a professional at first,, but he had the car for a month last Tuesday,,and hadn't figured it out yet. As of 3 pm today, Mack has picked the car up from the other shop, and already has the engine pulled. So hopefully in 10 days,,,,Little Red will be back on the road again......

Thanks again for being here for all us Vette lovers. You all have been great. When she returns,,,I promise to take photo's and share with everyone.

You all are the greatest!!! Tks. Dan & Shann Alle.
