I have an 86 Z51 that I have autocrossed for over ten years. This is its only duty. The problem being that when the rpms drop off going into a turn, making a 180 turn or any sudden drop in rpms to idle or below. The power steering pump will stall. Sitting at idle or normal driving there is no problem. Only when it drops off high rpms. The stall will remain for about thirty seconds or until the rpms come back up. There is no leaks, no air in the system. The rack is four years old the pump two years. The steering is free and easy no binding. I have solved this problem in the past by replacing the pump. Which is about every two to three years. I race against other vets of the same class and they don’t have this problem. I run 275x40 17 on the front and 315x35 17 on the rear, Kumho 700’s or 710’s. Most of the racers use this type of tire configuration. Do you have any ideas as to what causes this problem and hopefully a solution?

Are you running synthetic fluid (like Redline)?

NO, I used Pennzoil. I just flushed the system. Fluid was clear of any contaminates. Thanks for the reply JIm

Try redline full synthetic, more heat & foaming resistant for your application. At high rpms the pump spins too fast. You could also use a pump designed for high rpm (turns slower) A company called Turn One makes them. Rules in your autox class may prohibit the high performance pump. :)
