CM Got the '87, have questions of course :)

I got the ’87, 14k miles, two tone Saturday afternoon – she’s a beaut! Driving her back on the three hour trip home was a real spiritual experience. I’ll write a complete story about that later.

I have a few questions right off the bat…

1. The antenna whip is broken and the antenna motor constantly runs, even when the keys are out of the car. I can get the whole assembly at Ecklers, but my Haynes book hasn’t arrived yet (sent me C5 by mistake), how difficult of a repair is this? Previous owner put a switch on the battery terminal to prevent drain – huge hassle.

2. The windshield has a small chip/crack about the size of a pebble. I can feel the crack on both sides of the window so I’m not sure if a resin repair is possible? In trying to keep this ’87 all original for show, how important is keeping the original windshield intact compared to trying a resin repair that might fail?

3. After being in storage so long the air conditioning/vents system needs a good cleaning. I’ve seen the FAQ product (Fresh Air Quality Cabin Cleaner) by Run-Rite, has anyone tried something like that on a C4 - process? Is there a cabin filter on the ’87?

4. The passenger window shook really hard (sounded like it was going to fall out) as my wife closed the door with the window slightly open, and she pushed the door closed by the door not the glass. Is this normal, does the window have to be all the way up or down when closing door, or do I need to attend to this soon?

5. And last one for now...whats everyone suggest as product for getting the engine all nice and clean and showroom brite. It's not real bad but hs some oil spill, lots of old dust and some heat corrosion. The worst I could see is serious rust & corrison on the inner sides of the brake hubs, which previous owner tried to tell me would clean right up - don't think so, can't even reach them with out a lift up and under!

Thanks in advance for all you help.

Hey I'm a Vette Guy now! Whoooohooo, this car is already turning heads! It's fun, even my wife enjoys that part! Pictures coming soon!

The antenna module is not that hard to replace, as long as you remove the left rear inner fender assembly and the inner trim panels at the left rear of the trunk.

2. The windshield has a small chip/crack about the size of a pebble. I can feel the crack on both sides of the window so I’m not sure if a resin repair is possible? Personally, I wouldnt chance it. YOUR SAFETY is more important. The windshield is a structural part of the vehicle and is critical for safety.

3. After being in storage so long the air conditioning/vents system needs a good cleaning. I’ve seen the FAQ product (Fresh Air Quality Cabin Cleaner) by Run-Rite, has anyone tried something like that on a C4 - process? Is there a cabin filter on the ’87?

No cabin filter, but your only looking to clean the evaporator core and there are many products out there that kill bacteria and refresh your AC system.

4. The passenger window shook really hard (sounded like it was going to fall out) as my wife closed the door with the window slightly open, and she pushed the door closed by the door not the glass. Is this normal, does the window have to be all the way up or down when closing door, or do I need to attend to this soon?

No, there must be a window guide that is broken or the window regulator assembly is loose.
You will have to disassemble the door to determine it.

Superclean diluted per instructions on the bottle or Simplegreen both are very good engine degreasers. Use a standard garden hose to wash off and make sure to do it when the engine is COLD>

Thanks in advance for all you help.

CM FAQ (Fresh Air Quality) product

Just heard back from 2 Guys that FAQ Air Conditioner system cleaner can now be found at Sears Auto stores - a pretty good DIY product. If you have a newer model that has a cabin filter, make sure you change that too.
