Toyota says Ford tie-up ‘a possibility'
22 January 2007

The world's second-biggest car maker, Toyota, has confirmed that it would be interested in a technical alliance with Ford, currently third in the global stakes.

The Japanese giant has overtaken Ford in key markets, including the United States, in recent years. Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe said it would be up to Ford to propose the idea of sharing technical information, but he added, “Both sides would have to want it.”

A tie-up between Ford and Toyota could centre around Toyota’s hybrid technology, although Watanabe also said the chances of it involving vehicles other than hybrids “was not zero”. Ford is seriously considering a plug-in hybrid in the style of the Chevrolet Volt, and it already licenses Toyota technology for its American-market hybrids.

Meanwhile, General Motors has been looking at buying into Proton, Malaysia’s state-owned car maker. Proton is in financial trouble and needs the assistance of a larger maker for access to technology. The deal could provide GM with another low-cost manufacturing facility in the Far East to complement its Korean factories. It would also give it access to Lotus, a company it owned from 1980 to 1983.

I'm unsure how these buys & mergers, and comminglings would affect the US but I saw the writing on the wall in the 70's, it took 30 years to fruition.

One of the guys mentioned he's buying ford stock and seeing some nice profits...

I think he said he was buying at 7 and change...and is hoping to buy more this week before it hits nine...

A few hundred at a time...

I guess a technical merger with toyota might be a good idea. Although I like GM's approach to hybrids ie.. the new volt..

Other hybrids like toyotas really don't make sense..

I've even seen tv stations air tests of fords hybrid escape vs the gas only version and they both get the same mileage in real life Jersey driving..

Its kind of funny that toyota can even sell this nonsensical hybrid and those that believe that Japanese MYth that their cars are better....Still buy their crap..

Ford needs whatever it can to boost its stock price..and toyotas ripping them a new a$$hole in the marketplace...

One day all these americans buying toyotas will wake up when thier kids can't find a decent job...that they sold our country out.

Sorry to go off topic.....

Just amazing that news like this actually lifts stock prices..

I'm not a big ford fan but still. Just mentioning toyota in the same sentence and the stock jumps.. What is this world coming to...?

It's not off topic, like I said I knew it the 70's what was to come.

I use to see GM factory employees driving Toyota's, VW's etc... actually had the nerve to drive them into the parking lots at the plant. Know what happened to their cars? I'd hear complaints all the time..... my car was damaged, looks like it was hit with a hammer.... oh well!

Not that I condone damaging others property but when your bread & butter is the GM cars you build, you'd think they'd have some smarts.

I remember one guy Al, couldn't keep a new Toyota for a day without it taking a beating in the parking lot.

Should be interesting to see what happens or what comes of it!

The press wants the public to think these kinds of things are unheard of but the reality is sharing technology or a project happens often enough. I know of a DCX / GM project going on right now too.
