CM Found the leak, now what?

Alright, I crawled under my 01' Vette coupe to locate a leak. Here is what I found. Seems to be coming out of this cover. It is on the diff side of the bell housing. Leaks while idling. Professional thoughts anyone? Thanks in advance gang.

Hi there,
It could be 1 of 3 leak points.

#1, the oil pan gasket may have a leak and it is rolling down the bellhousing

#2, the oil pump seal is leaking, which will require transmission removal to fix

#3, the torque converter seal is leaking, which would also require removal of the transmission.

As your saying its leaking while running, its most likely the oil pump seal or torque converter seal.

Either way, not an easy repair.

Thanks Paul. Although I was expecting that diagnosis from you, I was hoping for something else. Any Idea what the book time might be on those repairs? Thank You again for your knowledge. Respectfully, mark

HI there,

Seals are not that expensive, probably about $25.00.

The labor to do the front pump seal is 8.0 hours, plus the time for the rear wheel alignment.

Just remember, a few things would have to be replaced.

Rear shock mounting bolts, the rear brake pipe retainers to the subframe, as they are not reusable.

Thank You Paul again for your time. Without a lift, I'm going to have to have a shop do the repairs. I just didn't want a shock when I saw the bill. I already had one of those when I had the diff changed. I guess I'll have to get on the stick and get those retainers and shock bolts ordered. Your help is unmeasurable. Respectfully, mark

HI there,

The brake pipe retainers hold the brake pipes to the frame. No matter how careful you are, they always either crack or snap so they will not hold the brake pipe so that they do not move.

The lower shock bolts are a stretch bolt and are NEVER to be reused.

The same goes for the subframe retainment nuts but those I have seen reused without issue.

Paul, I just returned from my local dealership and was told that the lower shock mounting bolts were discontinued. Any thoughts on where to go to find them? Also the counterman was having trouble reading his screen. He gave me 2 part #'s for the brake line retainers. 1040-7022 for the single tube, and 2560-7191 for the double. I know you don't have these #'s off the top of your head, but if they are correct, how many of each will I possibly need? Thanks again for your time and patience.

HI there,

10407022 is the correct part number for the rear brake pipe retainers.

They are not, but tell him to use lower shock bolts from a c6.

When are you doing to do this job ?

Good morning Paul. How many retainers will I need? I was wondering why GM would discontinue a part on such of a recent model. I will ask for the C6 bolts if I get the same answer about the C5's. I'm hoping to get the repair done within the next month. Kind of waiting on taxes. Thanks again, and have a great day! mark
