I prefer synthetics, as I think most of us do, but I understand many have additives that make them poor choices for manual gearboxes. I'm currently using Mobil 1 80-90W. Anyone have any suggestions based on experience with a quality lube I should use this Spring?

HI there, As long as your set up for API GL4/GL5, you can use any lubricant. JUST DO NOT ADD FLUID WITH FRICTION MODIFIERS> Allthebest, c4c5 |

I'm pretty sure Redline has one without modifiers. It seems many brands already have it in them. At least at the chain stores. Mark.

Anyone got a preference to brands they know don't have the modifiers? I never saw them mentioned on the Mobil 1 bottle, but now I hear it has them.

Is this what you are looking for? It says that it lacks friction modifiers on line 6&7. This is pasted from the Redline website. 75W90 NS GL-5 Gear Oil Designed for transmissions and transaxles - helps to slow synchros for easier shifting across a broad temperature range Popular in Ferrari, Porsche and Subaru transaxles Musclecar applications like Ford Top Loader, Borg-Warner T-10 and Super T-10, and Muncie transmissions Contains extreme pressure additives like our 75W90 GL-5 oil, *but lacks friction modifiers to balance slipperiness* Improved copper corrosion protection to prolong synchro life Helps with lock-up on weak limited-slip differentials-compatible with Red Line Limited Slip Friction Modifier for tuning slippage Also used with clutch-type LSDs in racing for maximum lock up Recommended for API GL-5, GL-6, MT-1, MIL-L-2105E and SAE J2360 75W90NS GL-5 Gear Oil - quart - $12.95 75W90NS GL-5 Gear Oil - gallon - $51.95 Quantity ABOUT RED LINE GEAR OIL FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS Appropriate coefficient of friction for most manual transmission synchronizers (other's synthetic gear oils are often too slippery for proper synchro engagement) Red Line offers lubricants to pinpoint nearly every transmission application MTL & MT-90 are not for use in differentials with hypoid gears Excellent gear and synchro protection, balanced slipperiness for easier shifting in cold climates Excellent for high- and low-mile transmissions Compatible with petroleums and other synthetics ALSO AVAILABLE FROM OUR DEALERS 58304 - 75W90NS GL-5 Gear Oil - quart 58305 - 75W90NS GL-5 Gear Oil - gallon 58306 - 75W90NS GL-5 Gear Oil - 5 gallon TYPICAL PROPERTIES API Service Class GL 5+ Viscosity Grade SAE 75W90 Vis @ 100°C, cSt 15.6 Vis @ 40°C, cSt 95 Viscosity Index 176 Pour Point, °C -45 Pour Point, °F -49 Flash Point, °C 221 Flash Point, °F 430 Brookfield Viscosity, Poise 400 @ -40°C

Redline might actually have it both ways. I remember seeing it without, at the Summit Racing store near me. I have a partial bottle of 75-90 RL in the garage. It says its good for limited slips and you might not need additives. The one shown above is most likely what I've seen that doesn't have modifiers. I think they also recommend it for limited slips for drag racing where you need maximum lockup. Mark.

It confused me when I saw Redline's "other" 80-90W with the friction modifiers. Glad they make one without. Now to just make sure the shop really uses the correct one. I guess I'll have to insist on seeing the bottle before they swap it out.
