If you downshifted and overreved the motor its probably ok but not a great thing to do...

If you were accelerating and over revved...the motor..Don't sweat it..

The rev limiter protects you.

Hope this helps.. and fwiw...I'm sure your fine...

BTW..how high over redline did you go?

we've all done it over the years...

Just to be clear, on an upshift the rev limiter saves your butt, but on a downshift mistake say, for example, 2nd to 1st under hard accel, you wanted 3rd but "somehow" went back to 1st, would it be possible to mechanically over rev REGARDLESS of the rev limiter?

That would be about 70 mph & slam it into 1st gear. A c5z will go into 1st @ 70, having seen it. The guy I was riding with did not let the clutch out all the way & car was ok. Made some really scary high revvy sounds though. Kinda like a F1 car sounds.

:(

I think yes you could get damage unless you threw the clutch in pretty darn fast. Not to mention spin the car around.

Before I purchase my 2008 Z51 coupe, I was driving a BMW M3 with a 8000k redline. When I bought the vette, I hit the rev limiter several times upshifting because I was so use to shifting at 8k rpm. I was also surprised how quickly the LS3 reved. The rev limiter is doing what it suppose to do, protect your engine, no harm done!

Absolutely you can over rev and damage the engine on a down shift, as you stated you can mechanically over rev the engine even though the computer shuts off fuel and ignition. I have seen valves loose their keepers and drop the valve on top of the piston through that very scenerio. Very ugly and expensive.
