I did 4 years ago, and I'm glad I did. I get metal "fuzz" on both of them everytime. I wouldn't want that stuff getting into my bearings.

Do you have a concern about how much metal fuzz there is? I have that magnet too, I think it came oem on the 2004. Or maybe I bought it.

With 40k miles and oil chg interval of about 5k I barely have any residue when I check mine & what there is is more of a powder than a "filing" . Those look more like filings. How many miles on the motor?

The motor has 43,000 trouble free miles. GM installed magnetic plugs during the 2007 model year. They mysteriously quit doing that and the plugs became "unavailable" @ GM dealerships (where I bought mine.)

The C6Z takes 2 plugs. They are both identical in size. One drains the pan (which will hold < 1 quart. The other drains the sump container which should be about 7 quarts. (8 quarts on 2008MY. 10 quarts on 2009MY to present.)

Also~ I would have been alarmed seeing all the ferrous debris on the magnets, but after seeing all the other people's plugs, I'm not concerned at all anymore.

This is also a great way to discover that one (or more) of the rocker bearing cages has failed. I've seen roller bearings stuck to the magnet more than I care to.

In fact, if you have an engine built between JUL2006 & JUL2007, you would do well to keep an eye on this.

Other than the roller bearings, what do you think is wearing down to produce those filings?

My LT4 engine had that same magnet oil drain plug (that I installed) and at 60k miles when I sold it, it never had more than a smudge of VERY FINE powder like metal.

I never over did the oil chg interval, but of course always used good full synthetic.

Your query has baffled everyone. We don't know where the metal is coming from. There have been many guesses (and 1 is bound to be right.) Since the LS7 is aluminum, there are few sources of ferrous material. You are correct in that the roller bearings and their cages are suspect. Cam? Cam chain/sprokets? valve stems? Guides? (metal imprenated swiss cheese...) Big end journals? Your guess is as good as anyones.

I have seen many mag plugs from LS7's, and my plugs are typical. Oh yes, since I'm a tribologist, I take special interest in lubricants. I suppose that's why I don't use Mobil 1. (I use something better...)

What did GM say about the metal particals at the end of your drain plug?
