CM Shift Boot Removal for A6

2008 3LT F55 A6

Hi.

I am in the process of installing a new shifter boot.

I have just removed the shifter knob, and now I am faced with the task of changing out the shifter boot.

Unlike on the MN6, it appears that the console has to be removed. I was wondering what experience any of you have had with this? I have seen threads on how to remove the bezel & console, but I would rather not take apart more than I have to.

Is it possible to just lift the tail section of the console up slighty, and slip the boot out, or do I have to remove the bezel and console entirely?

Thanks,

M...

HI there,

It is better if you remove the console.

It can get a bit difficult otherwise.

Hi again.

While we are on the topic, I am trying to get the shift knob back on, and I am having trouble doing so.

First I slide the knob down the shaft, then I try to get the boot plastic retaining ring into position. It just won't go up, probably because the 2 vertical plastic clips on the knob are slightly spread out, and will not allow the ring to move up into place. I keep trying to twist the boot to 1 pm, and move the ring up into place onto the knob, but it's a no go.

So, I removed the knob, and pull up on the boot as high as it will go, put the ring through the knob, and THEN try sliding the knob down onto the shaft. This doesn't work either, probably because the 2 vertical plastic clips on the knob are being held too tightly by the ring, and can't open enough to fit onto the shaft.

What am I doing wrong? Is the knob supposed to slide into position FIRST, and then the boot retaining ring slipped on? Or, get the boot retaining ring on FIRST, and THEN slip the knob down the shaft? Logically it seems like it should be the former, but I just don't know.

Thanks,

M...

Okay, I've resolved the problem and found a new one.

I was just too gentle on pushing the knob down. It needed a slight hand tap to allow the vertical tabs to lock into the shaft. Then up with the boot ring, and all is aok.

Or its it? I reconnected the negative post on the battery, and now I get a "shift to park" message on the DIC.

I will make a new thread about this.

Thanks,

M...
