Consumers had to work 26.2 weeks at the median family income to cover the average price of a new vehicle in the last quarter of 2006, according to Comerica Bank's Auto Affordability Index. That's a 2.2 week increase over the third quarter, which is the biggest one-quarter drop in affordability recorded by the index. Including finance charges, the total cost of buying an average-priced light vehicle was $29,400 in the fourth quarter, up 3 percent from a year ago.
