Greetings! I have been hunting my next Corvette all winter. The C6z is one of my targets. During this search, I have found 2of5 (rough average) C6Z's with replaced engines at low miles. Is there a vulnerability or other issues that causes the LS7 to suffer failures. I do not see this on any other LS, rather they are pretty much bullet proof in comparison. Is it due to driver error? the oil system? Have you seen any early LS7 failures? Thanks, as always, for the excellent content this site provides. Regards, Joe

Joe, according to your numbers, there would have been 14,000 failures. Don't you think the NHTSA would have issued a recall for a defect if there were 14,000 failures? (Or at least the media jumping all over this?) I'm still trying to figure out why spiders like the Mazda MX-6...(recent recall) Looking at forums and realizing that people only report BAD news, it makes it seem like the sky is falling. Rarely do you read a post commending GM for a job welldone. Now, as far as causes~ Usually, it's an owner defect. I'd say~ 1. The 1500 chinese made rockers that made it into the supply chain from Oct. 2006 to Jun 2007. Or 2. Owners "tuning" or modifying their cars. That's about it.

Thanks Norty! My 2/5 is of those I've seen for sale so not representative of the production. Just an all to frequent condition for my comfort. Driver error could certainly be the answer but it doesn't show up for other LS engines. Could be coincidence but in my search of many Corvettes for sale this is a stunning number of total engine replacements for low mile LS7s. Makes the LS3 more comfortable despite the loss of the HP.

HI there, I must caution the assumptions here. #1, you do not know WHY the engines were replaced. #2, you do not know if this was DICTATED BY GM, for quality control purposes. They are on exchange for the first year of production IN EVERY NEW ENGINE DESIGN. #3, they could have had an OIL LEAK and GM could have told them to remove and replace the engine. Without accurate data, this is a slippery slope. IF THERE WERE ANY HEAVY ISSUES, GM would have notified us technicians of it. Allthebest, c4c5 |

Be aware of flooded or totaled vehicles, they are out there and some can look pretty good visually. Not saying that the two vehicles that you looked at were totaled in any way, just to be aware of it and check out any used vehicle very carefully. Good luck with the purchase.
