Upon startup in garage, my 1981 Vette shows correct fuel level and is stationary. When moving, the gauge fluctuates below and above correct fuel level, perhaps 1/8 inch or so, back and forth. Upon stopping, oscillations will gradually subside to rest at correct fuel level. Any help on resolving this problem is appreciated.

HI there, How long have you had this issue ???? Has it gotten progressively worse ????? Does the needle jump erratically or just move smoothly back and forth???? Allthebest, c4c5 |

Issue noticed last fall before winter storage. Still there this spring. Seems about the same, not progressively worse. Needle swings smoothly in a small arc, kind of like following the float up and down. Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like a baffle problem in the tank.

Checked gauges fuse-OK. Checked wiring at sending unit at top of tank-OK. What do you mean by baffle problem?

HI there, There is a baffled area, almost like a small place inside the tank, that the leve sensor sits. Its almost like 4 walls to keep the gas from sloshing back and forth around the sensing unit. It would be possible that it has broken loose. With a very bright flashlight, you may be able to see if its moving around through the filler neck. Allthebest, c4c5 |
