The clamps on my 1999 C5 coupe were replaced under the new car warranty (car built 8/1998). They would pop open. The dealer technician said he had replaced several sets of them on the early 1999's and showed me how he had "bent" the clamps in the middle to make them have more of a radius bow (and thus hold the lid shut tighter). Try removing the existing clamps and bending them over a piece of pipe by hand (so they don't kink) and reinstall them. Good luck.

I,too, had my original set replaced under warranty. I was told that originally they received a bad batch from the supplier. My car was built on 8 - 20 - 98. VIN 3277. How many miles do you have on your car? Mine is a red 6MM coupe.

I have 53,xxx miles on it. A white coupe with both tops, firethorn red interior + A4. Mine was built in August 1998 after the massive work stoppage staged by the UAW over a dispute with GM over the building of the new pickup truck. I had placed the order in June and the car's build and delivery was delayed. I had numerous problems with mine, including several build problems at delivery that I was convinced was done on purpose by the assembly workers when they went back to work. While new and covered by the new-car warranty, the car broke down three separate times while driving out-of-state on vacation, stranding me and my wife each time and ruining the trip. The car broke down a fourth time in my garage, ruining another weekend trip with the car. I have owned at least one Corvette continuously for 35 years now. I really like driving my 1999 coupe, but did not buy another one due to the poor quality of my 1999.

This solution would not work for somebody who does shows or has to have everything original, but some people remove the lid completely and hold the filter on with plastic tie raps. Besides being cheap, they claim better performance, also.

I too, had many, many small problems with mine early on. But basically it turned out to be a very good vehicle. I had a 64,85,92,96 (which was a dog in many respects) and the 99. It's too bad that you had the problems with your 99. I don't remember the strike you mentioned. I do all of the maintenance, light duty, that is, myself. At 77 it's a little harder to climb under and out as it used to be. I love to drive and maintain the car. It looks and drives like a new car. The Big Guy !

I have a serious problem that I am unable to solve. It will sound impossible but is true. In replacing the clamps ( GM ) I cannot get the clamps to lock up. I have redone the job several times and still have the same situation. Everything fits perfectly but the clamps are too long. Parts are exact to the old ones. I know this sounds nuts but this I cannot find the solution either by looking, thinking and redoing the job. I have done this job previously and had no difficulty. Please believe me I have done my absolute best to rectify the situation to no avail. I would really appreciate someones experience in this matter as I'm starting to ? my sanity !
