Same on mine.

They look ok, not damaged. Is there a coating that wears off? The metal spring just rubs on the other metal parts.

What would be different if it were replaced with a new one?

kraz, if you're talking about the rubber hangers that are located at/under the rear bumper, then I'd say spray with either silicone spray, or some spray type motorcycle chain lube that has wax. It'll spray on thin to get into the nooks & cranies, but it'll solidify in 15 minutes to stay put. Be sure your exhaust is cool to the touch before spraying anything in this area.

I'm not sure which ones the op meant. The ones that squeak on mine are about the middle of the car.

:)

They are all metal.
