CM 1987 Corvette custom chip??

1987 Z-51 standard trans Vette

I am presently using the factory dual exhaust with the catalytic converters gutted, and Flowmaster mufflers. I'm also running a 180 thermostat and a coolant sensor that turns the fans on at 180. Soon I would like to rebuild the engine with a moderate Comp Cams camshaft and some intake upgrades along with a valve job, rings, bearings, etc.

Am I to believe I will need a custom computer chip that costs nearly 400 bucks for this??!! That's what Summit charges, and it's nuts!!

Any alternatives?

Thanks,
vettebob

I have a cam, valve job, hi-flow converter, and cat-back, a 180, and a $150 Hypertech. Runs great, except for the idle which is likely unrelated beyond a 50 +/- RPM lope.

If you have a good idle now, I expect you would with this rig too.

Ok thanks. If I remember correctly off the top of my head, that CompCam that you are running is the one I was interested in. How do you like it? Does it have a noticeable lope at idle? (Just LOVE that sound, besides the power boost of a good cam.)

Not so much lope as me not getting the idle right for whatever reason. If I run it at say 850, rock solid, but under 780, it swings 50RPM. Roller tip rockers will fit under my stock covers, but not sure about yours.

I like the cam a lot. Great surge at say 1800-4400. I also changed the TB to a 52MM. Breathes MUCH easier now. Have embarrassed a few Mustangs, each time claiming the car is rock stock just to twist the knife. Haven't run a 2011 5.0L yet but who knows?

Oh yeah! Eat those Mustangs up every chance you get. That's what my brother and I both do... Hate Mustangs!

By the way: getting an average of 21.4 MPG 50/50 driving (up from 18.6 before the cam, rockers, new Ford Racing 24lb injectors, and TB) and over 30MPG when I get stuck doing 55-60 MPH.

All (new) smog gear in place and functioning.

There are lots of other places that will burn a chip for less than $400. Check out PCMforLess as an example.

You won't need it if you stay close to stock. If you change injectors, let it breathe easier or change the cam then a new chip is a must.
