CM Exhaust residue - issue or normal?

Subject - 2001 automatic - 64,000 kloms

my corsa exhaust tips are like brand new and after every drive I clean them.

The question is - why is it after a drive the passenger side tip is so much darker than the drivers side.

What causes this build up of black material.

Do any of you mechanics use exhaust residue as a troubleshooting tool to diagnose issues before they become serious.

I was thinking like injectors, valve seals, minor coolant leaks or ?

The car still has the orig. H pipe.

I find it odd that one side always seems to have more deposit than the other.

Mine was doing this too. Now I have a blown head gasket. I don't know if they are related.

IMO they should be about the same, a significant difference means one side is richer & one leaner, true? Maybe one cat is clogging up more than the other?

I agree in thinking both should be the same. I've no experience in this but I bet if a scan tool were connected, while the engine was running, monitoring bank 1 and bank 2 would clue you as to what's happening, or how its running.

I also don't know how to read what's normal either. Not that what I said is a big help to you, but if you have access to a tool that can monitor, its worth a shot.

Could a plug possibly be weaker then the others and that cylinder not burning complete?

I don't know, just guessing here.

Now go play with your tools!

You know Tool Guy, now that you mention it, one of my O2 sensors was bad.

It might... I personally don't have enough experience with all of this myself.

I now both O2's "talk to" each other, and if one is out of spec, I think the rear, it tells the front to richen or lean out fuel to that bank.
I could have that backwards, but the two do work together regardless which I'm sure you're already are aware of Junkman.

It was probably the side with the bad head gasket? Coolant will ruin O2 sensors.

Is it possible that the reason for the uneven exhaust staining is because one side is holding more water than the other after washing and then on the next start up it blows all that dirty water out and deposits it on the tip? Does the staining have watermarks in it or is it a smooth consistent black "powdery" appearance? I have Corsa X-Treme w/longtube headers. My tips get dirty very quickly due to the unrestricted flow.
