I had my 2006 base coupe A6 with 19,000 miles at the dealer to service the active handling system. When the tech extracted codes he said there was one set from the throttle position sensor. It indicated the throttle was closing completely and that the intake needed to be cleaned. He said that I should have seen a light which I didn't and that the code was set 50 miles ago. Can the tech tell how many miles ago a code was set and at 19,000 miles would the intake need a cleaning?

HI there, The service active handling will not be created by a throttle position sensor code. What code did they list ????? Also, it is possible that your throttle body will need to be cleaned, however did you ever have a stalling condition or an unstable idle??? Allthebest, c4c5 |

Hi: Sorry for the misunderstanding. The car was brought in for an active handling malfunction which was corrected. When the tech was extracting codes for that problem he also got a separate code for the throttle body which he said indicated it was not closing completely. He did not indicate the code. The intake was also cleaned on that visit. My question is can the tech tell how many miles ago a code was set- (he indicated 50 miles ago). At 19,000 miles would the intake need to be cleaned ? Further, the engine has always run well with good mileage.

Are you getting oil in your intake? PCV catch can may help (although it's not GM recommended to have.)

Hi: There is no oil in the intake. Per the tech it was carbon build up.He ran cleaner through it. I would like to know if a code such as from the throttle position sensor actually indicates the mileage it was set at or how many miles ago it was set. Also is 19,000 miles early for a cleaning ? Thanks

This makes no sense. Where did the "carbon" come from? Did you inspect your air cleaner for tears or fitment? How the heck would "carbon" get into the intake? Unless your car backfires A LOT... I'm pretty sure your car isn't backfiring THAT much or you'd throw codes like crazy. Something doesn't sound right here.

If I were a cynic (oh yeah I am) I think your ticket got bumped up with an cheap easy service (BTW it is a legit procedure WHEN NEEDED) that you probably got charged about $150. You can DIY, it's really easy & I do all my vehicles every other OC.

Hi Froggy: Thanks for your reply. I am only stating what the tech told me. I too am cynical and that is why I started this post. I have had no problems whatsoever with the engine. The service was $130. At this point it seems like an expensive lesson unless miles do not show up as part of codes. Thanks

One of my neighbors is a SM at a toyota dealer (large) and he tells me stuff. He said it's usually not necessary on most cars unless there is a rough idle (which may also have other causes) and it's a mileage driven service (not time) and anyone with a screwdriver, can of throttle body cleaner ($5) and rag can do it. It's almost 100% profit and the techs are "encouraged" to "recommend" the service on any car over 1 year old. The code part could have been imaginary & you'd never know or have a way to prove it. Learn how to read codes & post here for help. Check them every once in a while, they don't all light up a check engine light. We are fortunate to have several outstanding "good guy" techs here. Sigh. Some things never change.
