CM 1990 speedometer issue

I have had an ongoing problem with my 90 vette. The speedometer works when it wants to and not always well. Either I have no display, or it may work for a minute then get stuck on a number and stay there. But usually a bit into a long trip it will start working. Where should I start? Speed sensor?

HI there,

No, I would be looking at the chassis grounds to determine what is going on.

Usually, with a VSS issue, the speed would jump and maybe you would have a point where it would not react at all.

That wouldnt cause there to be NO display.

Please give more details if available.

Sometimes from a blank screen it comes on and sticks on a number and then if I stop and turn the car off and start it again it will work fine.

Hi there,

So, I would not correlate a VSS issue, only because the display would read 0 if it was not working at all.

It would NOT go blank.

Any work done to the vehicle????

HI there,

If I was a betting person, I would be leaning towards a cluster itself, based on what your describing.

Thats just a guess though, considering I will have to check my wiring schematics to see exactly what components you can check.
