It's been my experience that a leak is most likely to occur with the seal in the compressor. Also, if the outside temp is below, something like 38degs, the a/c will not operate...in order to protect the whole system.

Do what Junkman says....have an a/c shop check the pressure first, then let them do the dye test. Then you'll know for sure before wasting money.

You sure on that?

Did you mean to say, "Until the engine warms up".

Yes, there are many connections in the AC system, any could be suspect.

AC work is not for the normal back yard wrench, the car should really be taken somewhere and looked at so it gets fixed right the first time for you.

Now go play with your tools!

He's right. It's outside temp.

"Important
Ambient air temperature must be above 3°C (38°F)."

The car uses the outside air temp sensor to determine this.

For a manual system like mine, I think it uses the AC pressure sensor.

Now go play with your tools!

I did not know that. Thanks to FIXVet & ToolGuy.

I always thought that "conditioned air" was an important part of defrosting/deicing a car when ambient is below 32f.

I remember reading about the outside temp sensor when my 1999 Grand Prix was bad. That car was the first auto system I've had and the manual also said it too uses the outside temp sensor to detect ambient temps and wont turn the compressor on if below 38 deg.

Dealer couldn't fix the AC, got home looked at the invoice said I needed a new control module, told the knucklehead when I got there I had already done that. He said he'd call me back, hasn't so the hell with him. It's got to be electrical because the entire system is dead.

Bring it to an HVAC shop.
