I've wanted to ask you technicians this question for a long time, when you start the engine, how long should it take for the oil pressure to register? "Right now my 2003 LS1 starts up and I count 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi and the oil pressure registers half way through the second mississ . . " so it takes about 2 seconds to register. What is too long to register? Is this the time of most wear on an engine? I've read or heard that your engine is most at risk when starting. What is your opinion? Thank you.

Oil pressure needs to happen immediately on start up, but the gauge is buffered and may take a while to register. I have never paid attention on my own vehicle as to how long it takes to register on the gauge, next time I use it I will though. Cold start up is usually the hardest on bearing surfaces since it does take a fraction of a second to build pressure which is why it is very important to use the correct viscosity oil for the area that the vehicle is used in.

Ok, I went and started mine today and watched the oil pressure gauge, and just like yours it took about 2 seconds to read full value. You actually do have oil pressure on immediate start up, it's the gauge buffering that causes the actual needle to move slowly to full reading.
