CM headlights going out unexpectedly?

I have a hardcore project on my hands (1976 C3), though the car is a rolling restoration. Every once in a while the headlights do not work. The taillights function and dash lights, but not headlights, when they are not working the BRIGHT light stays on at the dash?? The dimmer switch was replaced but still same thing. Is there something I am overlooking? There is no fuse under dash is there something I should check under hood...
Thanks
zak

Sounds like a bad ground to the bulbs. Low beam element is looking for a ground and is back feeding through the hi beam element. Also make sure your dimmer switch connector isn't melted or has burned wire connectors in it.
