CM c4c5 - Transmission flush or filter/fluid?

c4c5,

I am looking for advice - after the fact.

At 50,000 miles, I took my 2004 Pontiac GP GT2 3.8 non-supercharged to my Chevrolet dealer for a transmission filter/fluid change and a fuel filter. I purchased the car at the dealer and have done business there for years.

I asked for a transmission filter and fluid change - with Dextron VI fluid. When the car was done and I paid for the service, I checked the invoice. It listed 16 quarts of fluid at $2.75 per quart, a "flush" chemical at $20.00 + labor. I talked to the service advisor and he said they "never" change the filter unless there is a problem. He was evasive about the fluid used and finally admitted it wasn't GM Dextron VI.

My question - I have never had the transmission flush done on a GM car. I have either changed the filter/fluid or had it done at the dealer. Is the flush a good idea? Should I return and have them change the filter? Should only Dextron VI be used? The advisor said they used "Dextron" fluid.

This service was done as routine maintenance - not because I was having a problem.

Thanks in advance.

The flush is when the converter and trans cooler are flushed too. Seems the dealer did not take the pan off but hooked the flushing machine up and did the flush. A flush would use more fluid then if you took the pan off and changed the filter. The machine flushes the old fluid out of the car until new clean fluid can be seen in the machine hoses.

Personally, I take the pan off and change the filter or clean it on my one car. However you only get a few quarts of trans fuild out doing it that way.

Some will say a flush is better but what gets me is you specifically asked for a change and new filter and did not get that. That is wrong on the dealers part to me. I would have also wanted a new filter and cleaned the pans magnets at 50,000 miles if I had never had one.

Hi there,
First, flushing the fluid is always a good maintenance practice.
Second, filter do NOT always have to changed.
This is normally a case by case situation, because when you drop the pan, you lose about 6 quarts when you change the filter.
So, you change the fluid, then you flush it so it does take more then a normal flushing procedure.
However, you did specify Dexron 6 and they did NOT comply.
To me, thats wrong.
There is NO licensing for Dexron 3 any longer, so what did they use????

c4c5specialist,

Thank you for the reply. I guess the flush was okay. I am not sure what type of fluid the dealer used, but I suspect they used a brand other than GM (or old, in-stock fluid). I will check with the service advisor and repost.

Is the Dextron 6 fluid much more expensive than $2.75 a quart?
